December 2011 – West Canal Embankment Stability Improvements Near Oasis Park

Owner:  Quincy – Columbia Basin Irrigation District Contract Amount: $ 1,995,620
Project Manager: Aaron Halling
Superintendent:  Michael Melton
Assistant P. M.:  Lisa Snell
Description: The District has identified issues associated with soft soils under the West Canal
in the project vicinity. Groundwater from upland sources was determined to be
part of the issue and the District installed a trench drain on the west side of the
canal in the winter of 2010/2011. While this has helped to intercept and remove
much of the upland drain water, water continues to keep the soft soils under the
canal saturated. This project aims at replacing the soft materials with freedraining
materials and further collecting and removing water from beneath the
canal.
This project includes mobilization to the project site, demolition of the existing
canal, excavation and removal of unsuitable materials, reconstruction of
approximately 850 linear feet of concrete lined canal, installation and
maintenance of a pump system and dikes to bypass canal water around the
construction activities, removal and replacement of canal fill material (including
dewatering activities), installation of a blanket and trench drain, and construction
of a sump, pump, and electrical system on the east side of the West Canal. The
Engineer will identify areas in which Geomembrane cutoff wall will be required for
installation by Contractor.
